Siglas
Acabo de tener una discusión con mi jefe porque «tercamente» cambié la grafía de una sigla en un documento. La sigla no era cualquier cosa pues es el nombre de un tipo de documento que todos los institutos de investigación adscritos o vinculados al Ministerio de Ambiente deben crear. El nombre del documento es Plan Institucional Cuatrienal de Investigación Ambiental y suelen llamarlo Picia o PICIA. Mi jefe dice que debe usarse la primera forma mientras yo me inclino por la segunda.
Según mi jefe, que sigue el Diccionario Panhispánico de Dudas, cualquier sigla de más de cuatro letras debe escribirse como un siglónimo. Un siglónimo es una sigla que se vuelve palabra, de manera que los siglónimos se escriben usando minúsculas. Un ejemplo es Unicef, sigla que corresponde a United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. En consecuencia debería ser Picia porque es una sigla de más de cuatro letras que además puede leerse como se escribe, como una palabra; de hecho la palabra picia está en el diccionario de la Real Academia.
Mi lógica es más sencilla pues tiene una sencillez que le falta cada vez más a la Real Academia a la hora de reglamentar el idioma. Para mí, si es sigla (es decir, si cada letra corresponde a la inicial del nombre, por ejemplo ONU, FARC), va en mayúscula, aun si puede o no leerse como se escribe, aun si tiene más de cuatro letras. Y si es un acrónimo (es decir, la palabra usa varias letras de cada palabra, como en el caso de Ingeominas o Ecopetrol), va en minúsculas.
Pero la verdad es que mi jefe tiene razón porque sigue la norma: «Las siglas que se pronuncian como se escriben, esto es, los acrónimos, se escriben solo con la inicial mayúscula si se trata de nombres propios y tienen más de cuatro letras … o con todas sus letras minúsculas, si se trata de nombres comunes». Así que el problema podría ser otro: ¿es Picia o es picia? ¿El Plan o el plan? ¿El Plan del Instituto Humboldt o el plan de uno de los institutos adscritos o vinculados al Ministerio de Ambiente? ¿Cuándo el plan es un nombre propio?
(Bueno, definitivamente no es Farc ni Onu, como escriben en Semana o El Tiempo.)
Estas preguntas pendejas suelen no serlo cuando uno es el gestor del lenguaje en general y del institucional en particular. Esas mayúsculas acaban proyectando valores y significados o tienen desempeños tipográficos que producen efectos agradables o desagradables. Por ejemplo, se espera de un diseñador con sensibilidad tipográfica que use versalitas en vez de mayúsculas a la hora de componer siglas.
Al final quedará Picia, con mayúscula, porque corresponde a que siempre hablamos del Plan Institucional, con mayúscula.

El inglés es una lengua de palabras cortas, casi siempre monosílabas, y su desempeño es como el de una lengua aglutinante: sin género, sin declinaciones, casi sin preposiciones, una misma palabra puede ser sustantivo, verbo, adjetivo y adverbio. Parece natural que conviertan palabras largas en sílabas y un conjunto de palabras en siglas o acrónimos. Parece que les resultara insoportable usar palabras enteras, por lo que el latín y el griego han padecido la descriteriada y asemántica tijera del inglés corriente en nombre de la economía del lenguaje: bus, dino, mini, tech, holic, matic, icious, etc. En español parece ser una costumbre cada vez más frecuente: el súper, la bici, el cole, deli, etc.
Las siglas también toman cada vez más fuerza en el español, en los ámbitos de la academia y de las organizaciones. Los documentos, los procesos y los cargos dejaron de llamarse por sus nombres. Me parece innecesario, me parece que empobrece el lenguaje, nos pone a hablar como bebés balbuceantes. Y tipográficamente aparecen adefesios como D+T o CyT. Mi opinión respecto al uso de siglas es que solamente deben usarse para los nombres propios o para expresiones demasiado largas, como las que ocuparían todo un renglón o más.
El otro lado de las cosas es que las siglas han desplazado a las abreviaturas, que eran originalmente soluciones taquigráficas (tienen su origen en los procesos jurídicos, como casi todo lo que tiene que ver con escritura) y que son la pesadilla de los que tienen que verse con paleografía o la composición tipográfica. Por las abreviaturas existen los nombres de las notas musicales o las voladitas.
Adenda: Según Fernando Ávila, las siglas deberían escribirse siempre en mayúsculas con el fin de distinguirlas de palabras homónimas. Y pone como ejemplo SOPA. Gracias a Julián Ortega por este dato.

Y respecto al fondo del asunto, la costumbre termina imponiéndose. Suena mas lógico PICIA con mayúsculas sostenidas. Pero el jefe “siempre” tiene la razón.
